The President of Estonia, Arnold Ruutel, along with the President of Lithuania, Valdis Adamkus officially announced that he would not go to Moscow to attend the celebrations on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Victory over Nazi Germany

A monument had been unveiled in a small town in Western Estonia. It showed a soldier in a German uniform with a Waffen-SS (combat SS) unit emblem, wearing a steel helmet and holding a machine gun. The engraving had the following text: “To the Estonian men who fought in 1940-1945 against Bolshevism and for the restoration of Estonian independence.”

During World War II about 30,000 Estonians served in the Red Army fighting Nazi Germany, and about 70,000 fought on the side of the Hitlerites.
