My eBay story
Posted on June 30, 2005
I’m a happy camper now ;-)
Last month I ordered a laptop battery from ebay seller, but it was lost on the way here, so I requested a refund from the seller, he promised to give it but did not send it to me. So I filed a claim thought PayPal, and today I got my money. But the best part that not only I did not loose any money but managed to gain 5.46$ because of the US/CAD currency conversion.

Matisse - the new NetBeans GUI Builder

Matisse - the new NetBeans GUI Builder.
I’m not really a NetBeans IDE fan, but after I saw their new GUI Builder demo, I decided to try it. To test if it can really be useful I decided to re implement application from COMP249 assignment 2. This application has tabs, sliders, drop boxes, button groups… It took me quite some to develop original QUI, and I spent most of the time trying to build nice looking layout. With NetBeans it took me approximately 30 minutes to build the same layout and move listeners and other logic from the original application. (I never used Netbeans before, Matisse is in alpha stage and often throws NPEs, I had to learn how it works… so now I can probably do the same thing must faster). Anyway I’m really impressed (mush better then IDEA GUI builder) and I will probably use it quite often when Sun will release the final version.

Glenn Vanderburg: Quotations on Software Design:
“It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. Basic professional ethics would instead require him to write a DestroyCity procedure, to which Baghdad could be given as a parameter.”

U.S. Bombardment Kills 76 in Afghanistan

U.S. Bombardment Kills 76 in Afghanistan - Yahoo! News… Hmm people defend their country against occupying forces. How evil is that? Why are they killed? Maybe because after 2002 heroin production increased 1400% (185 tons in 2001, 1900-2700tons in 2002 and 7000 in 2003) and U.S army wants it’s share? Just a guess.

US Peace Corps quits Haiti
Posted on June 20, 2005
I have a new anecdote for you all — US Peace Corps quits Haiti. First I thought that Peace Corps are supposed to help keep peace in troubled regions, and now we should laugh and giggle because they are running from “escalating violence”. But after looking at their official goals :
* To help the people of interested countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained workers;
* To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served;
* To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
It looks to me that they are doing what that are supposed to do (spreading American influence and values), they just have wrong name. “Peace corps” should be renamed to “propaganda and special interest corps”.
Nothing to be ashamed of, it’s not that they are working for the “Ministry of Love” of something like that.
